Some weeks back, Woolf + Lapin had the privilege of visiting En Masse at work at the Fine Arts Museum before today’s big opening of the Big Bang exhibition.

This is Jason Botkin at work. He is one of the three co-directors of En Masse along with Fred Caron and Rupert Bottenborg.

The Neo Pop mural was created by 30 carefully selected artists.

In Rupert Bottenborg’s words the exhibition is “An exploded view of Montreal’s creative community.”

Far from the usual stuffy museum environment, you can sit in the assorted fat boy cushions and take in the view all around.

It is awesome.

Toutes nos félicitations à Réal Olivier Lanthier et François St-Jacques qui fêtent les 15 ans de leur galerie, Art Mûr.

Dans leur numéro de nov.- déc. 2011, les galeristes racontent les balbutiements de la belle aventure qu’est devenue Art Mûr. Ils se souviennent, non sans ironie, de leur toute première exposition dans leur premier local, rue Notre-Dame…une ancienne salle de quilles!

Ils se souviennent surtout des critiques de l’exposition en question. “Il n’avait pas détesté l’exposition mais c’était l’éclairage néon et le tapis commercial qui avait surtout déplu.”

C’est après encore d’autres péripéties que François et Réal ont décidé de déménager la galerie au 5826 Saint Hubert. À l’époque, on considérait le projet ambitieux–22,000 mille pieds carrés sur quatre étages n’est pas rien comme espace de diffusion. Devant ce beau défi, ils se sont inspirés de la populaire citation du film Field Of Dreams: “If we will build it, they will come”.

Quinze ans plus tard, la devise a porté fruit. L’exposition Mens-moi/Please lie to me (5 novembre au 17 décembre)  fait bien plus que le prouver. La Galerie Art Mûr est la galerie d’art contemporain la plus dynamique à Montréal.

Art Mûr c’est bien plus qu’une simple galerie d’art. En quinze ans, le projet de Réal et François a évolué en un réel centre d’art. Bravo, Messieurs!

Le film est à l’affiche au Cinéma du Parc (5 novembre 15h00) dans le cadre du Festival du Monde Arabe de Montréal.

À la sortie du film cet été, Bachir nous a accordé une entrevue. La voici donc…

En Masse se joindra à Melissa Auf Der Maur, Marie Chouinard, Michel Rabagliati, Denys Arcand, Wajdi Mouawad et bien d’autres dans le cadre du Big Bang du Musée des Beaux Arts.

Tous les artistes ont eu carte blanche pour “imaginer une installation avec pour seule condition de choisir une oeuvre de la collection; pour la réinventer…” transformant le Musée en un “open work”.

Woolf + Lapin is excited to be in talks with See Creature, Dale Hayward and Sylvie Trouvé’s new animation venture,.

Formerly of La Moustache, Sylvie and Dale have recently given birth to See Creature, which is founded on the belief that anything can be animated.

True specialists at on-location animation, they work in stop-motion, 2D, after effects, mixed media and live action to create the most impressive of desired outcomes.

We will post more stuff of theirs soon, namely their much talked about H2Oil.

En Masse was in Ottawa over the weekend for this mural commissioned by the Ottawa International Animation Festival.

“Under the direction of Jason Botkin and Rupert Bottenberg, EN MASSE is an ongoing series of artistic conversations of a sort, a non-linear dialog connecting many artists through the creation of large-scale collaborative black and white murals. The shape and character of each specific EN MASSE event is defined by those creators who take part in the project, and the energies they individually and collectively bring to the mix. EN MASSE brings together emerging artists drawn from the diverse fields of the ‘high’ and ‘low’ brow arts, the latter including graffiti, alternative comics, and illustration.

“The EN MASSE mandate is twofold; firstly, to increase the visibility of new young artists, both collectively and as individuals, and secondly, to foster community-oriented art events and programming, built upon a specific form of collaborative interaction and immersion between the chosen artists. Our events are greatly enhanced through partnerships with a wide range of arts/educational organizations, such as Art Pop Montreal, EMSB (English Montreal School Board), various galleries, and of course, the public.” (EN MASSE Facebook)
