The Grand Prize winner for best animated feature is Mary and Max (directed by Adam Elliot, Australia). Jury member Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre says “it’s so touching and moving. It’s surprising to see how much so. Even if it’s claymation, you get all these strong feelings watching it. It’s a gotta see when it comes out in theatres.”

“The jury was profoundly touched by one particular film (My Dog Tulip directed by Paul and Sandra Fierlinger, USA) therefore would like to award an honourable mention. This film has an outstanding style and above all, the way in which it allows the audience to identify with the characters and the relationships.” For more winners…

Woolf + Lapin @ Ottawa International Animation Festival

Woolf + Lapin’s talent was on show at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Out of 2,185 entries Emmanuel Bellegarde’s short film Une ville was selected for the International Showcase screenings featuring the best new animation from around the world. The showcase includes a mixture of short independent films, TV commercials, series, student films, music videos, and more. Pixar’s Partly Cloudy was definitely a crowd pleaser.

My Dog Tulip was a feature competition entry (directed by the Paul & Sandra Fierlinger tandem). It’s beautiful animated watercolors about an endearing, if not at times bizarre, portrait of a man whose life is radically focused on recording the minutiae of his temperamental German shepherd’s life. It’s the biography of a snarky bitch, as it were. It is based on J.R. Ackerley’s book, which Christopher Isherwood described as one of the “greatest masterpieces of animal literature. ” The  Fierlingers bring life to Ackerly’s faultless and respectful observations. It is profound and meditative while delving into the strangeness of a co-dependent relationship between a man and a canine.

Also, as we’ve said, Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre’s Passages and Patrick Boivin’s Indochine Playboy videoclip were both part of the Québec My Love series.

More to come…

Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre Jury Member @ Ottawa International Animation Festival

We are proud to introduce Woolf + Lapin’s new talent—trailblazing filmmaker Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre. She’s been invited to be part of the jury for the 09 edition of the Ottawa International Film Festival, the biggest fest of its kind in North America.

Joined on the phone this morning, she said she was anxious to get together with her fellow jurors and see the buzz and talent in the animation world right now. She’s also presenting her very personal Passages in the Québec My Love series, right along Patrick Boivin’s Indochine videoclip Playboy.

Marie-Josée exploded on the scene a few years back with her remarkable film, McLaren’s Negatives (2006), combining documentary, drama and animation like few filmmakers before her.

The film got noticed fast and established her as an emerging talent, some even comparing her to Persepolis author Marjane Satrapi. McLaren’s Negatives has won more than twenty awards the world over. And one award she cherishes and keeps on her desk is the Jutra she won for the film.

She has since directed the non-animated film Post-Partum, a very personal film about womanhood and birth, both are recurring themes in her growing body of work. She cites experimental filmmakers Leighton Pierce and Stan Brakhage as inspirations, and these of course are second only to, Mr Experiment himself, Norman McLaren.

Among her upcoming projects, Marie-Josée is writing a feature-length animation film on Claude Jutra and is in pre-production on Femelles, a very inventive take on working moms using her signature style as always.
