John Poliquin is MMVA 2016 Winner For Grand Theft’s QUIT THIS CITY

Congratulations to director John Poliquin for winning best Electronic Dance Music video for Grand Theft’s (feat. Lowell) QUIT THIS CITY at the 2016 Much Music Video Awards.

John shot this across 2 nights in Barcelona with a primarily Spanish cast and crew. “The scenes,” says John, “are a combination of conventional filmmaking and on-the-wall documentary observations. Many of the scenes were filmed in the rowdy nightlife district where the camera had to be concealed for safety. The scenes where the girls are working the corner were photographed on a long lens from across the street.”

The concealed documentary-style shoot led to the actresses being approached by both police and men looking to hire sex workers. Some of the men who approached the actresses were disrespectful and harassing.

“This unfortunately mirrored the malicious spirit of the final man in the film,” says John.

Props also to Director X for his video of the year nod for Drake’s HOTLINE BLING!

Maker Studios Gather Talent in NYC

Last week, during the Digital Content New Fronts 2016, Maker Studios gathered, among others, PewDiePie, Romeo Lacoste and Patrick Boivin.

This was an intimate showcase where Maker talent mingled with buyers as the network announced new concepts.

“We have worked hard to perfect the process of how we work with clients, to bring them tangible results with a focus on media and content creation,” said head of sales Jason Krebs. “While anyone can create individual components of what we offer, Maker Studios’ uniquely packaged programs truly set us apart in the ecosystem.”

“In a media landscape where video has become commoditized, now, more than ever, it’s important to focus on differentiated strengths,” added Gabriel Lewis, head of development & studios. ”

Woolf + Lapin’s very own Patrick Boivin has been part of this process and we can’t wait to launch what he’s come up with!

Bachir Bensaddek’s Montréal la blanche at the Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québecois 2016

Fresh from a world premiere at Rotterdam 2016, Montréal La Blanche is having its Quebec premiere tonight at the Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Québécois 2016.

Amokrane is a taxi driver, working one Christmas night. After losing her car, Kahina gets into his cab. She’s in a hurry to meet her daughter, who’s at her estranged husband’s house. But they don’t get there in time. Amokrane soon realizes his passenger is a former Algerian pop star who he thought had died.

So begins a strange night of wandering and confrontation. With this first fictional feature, adapted from his own play, Bachir Bensaddek has made a captivating film, a portrait of Montreal’s Muslim community in all its diversity, depth and complexity. Tender and lucid, Montréal la blanche asks frank, important questions about identity and integration, while introducing two engaging actors: Rabah Aït Ouyahia and Karina Aktouf.

Props to Bachir and Stéphane Tanguay at Productions Kinesis!
