Steven R. Mitchell

Steven is a Toronto-based, award-winning screenwriter, producer and director whose career spans scripted
television, documentaries, factual entertainment, and feature film development.

He began his career as a film and television editor, where he developed a deep understanding of visual
storytelling and the craft of shaping compelling narratives. That foundation led to post-production producing
before evolving into story producing, series producing, and creative leadership on films and hundreds of hours of television.

His selected credits include THE LITTLEST HOBO, MY SECRET IDENTITY, MATRIX, YOUTH & CRIME:
BEYOND THE HEADLINES, THE SMART WOMAN’S SURVIVAL GUIDE, EVERYDAY EXOTIC hosted by
celebrity rapper and chef Roger Mooking, and YOU GOTTA EAT HERE! featuring improvisational comedian
John Catucci. As Series Producer of YGEH!, he shaped and led the Food Network hit during its Canadian
Screen Award-winning 5-year run. Throughout his career, Steven has been recognized for his ability to
uncover the emotional heart of a story, whether developing original concepts, leading productions, or crafting
complex narratives in post-production.

Over four decades, Steven has approached storytelling from every stage of the creative process, and now from the blank page as a feature screenwriter.

His debut screenplay, SHADOW IN HAWTHORN BAY, adapted from Janet Lunn’s bestselling and acclaimed
novel, has received international recognition through screenplay competitions and film festivals, introducing
him as a compelling new voice. His interests and work span historical drama, folklore, elevated science fiction,
and dark satire, united by a fascination with overlooked stories and the people at their centre.

Steven is currently developing THE CLOWN RIOTS, a satirical feature inspired by one of Canada’s strangest
true stories, THE SAGA OF SKALLAGRIM ICE-WASTER, based on the John Calvin Bachelor dystopian
science fiction novel “The Birth of the People’s Republic of Antarctica.”

He continues to explore the unscripted space where he has developed BIG SCIENCE, a documentary series
exploring the remarkable skilled trades of people behind the world’s largest scientific research facilities, and
EXTREME RITUALS, a documentary series that explores how extreme ritual behaviour fulfills, excites, heals,
and unites us.
