Turtle Power: Randall Lobb’s Doc To Be Released By Paramount

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the introduction of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle indie comic originally created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

To retrace that journey, Paramount is releasing Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a 98-minute documentary directed by our very own Randall Lobb.

The doc is an in-depth look at a franchise that has made an estimated five billion dollars in the thirty years since two young, wannabe comic artists watching TV one-upped each other into creating one of the most popular and beloved entertainment properties in history.

The official release is scheduled four days after the Michael Bay produced reboot of the feature’s tentpole release, August 8, 2014.

You can see it now on Netflix.

Jim Donovan Nominated at the DGC Awards

“Ghost Dance”, an episode of Cracked season 2, that Jim Donovan directed, has been nominated for Best Dramatic Series at the 2014 DGC Awards.

Woolf + Lapin joins Jim in congratulating writer Laurie Finstad, showrunner Bruce M. Smith, creators Tracey Forbes and Calum de Hartog, producers Peter Raymont, Manny Danelon and Victoria Woods, and the entire cast and crew for making such an amazing episode.

In other news, Jim is busy working on the completely new TV series “Le Clan” with Montreal’s Casablanca.

The Radio-Canada television series written by acclaimed writer Joanne Arsenau (19-2) and produced by award-winning producers Joanne Forgues of Casablanca Films, Mark Poulain of Avenue Productions and Cécile Chevrier of Vent d’Est Productions in Moncton.

“This co-production will be one of next season’s flagship dramas on SRC and I am thrilled to be tapped for the entire series, an amazing family crime drama,” Jim says.

André Chocron Directs Paul McCartney’s “Appreciate”

Helmer André Chocron recently released this clip for Paul McCartney’s “Appreciate.”

We particularly like the sci-fi angle… that is the robot called “Newman.”

Speaking about Newman the former Beatle said: “I woke up one morning with an image in my head of me standing with a large robot. I thought it might be something that could be used for the cover of my album NEW, but instead the idea turned out to be for my music video ‘Appreciate’. Together with the people who had done the puppetry for the worldwide hit War Horse, we developed the robot who became Newman.”

André did this through Friend.

Woolf + Lapin and BRTHR Team UP

This is Iggy Azalea’s Bounce (Vision Film) that the directing duo BRTHR helmed about a year ago.

It very much captures the BRTHR savoir-faire not to mention Iggy Azalea’s strong Tupac inspired persona. The Bollywood theme is perfect for the song as well as for Iggy who earlier in May released her album The New Classic, becoming the highest-charting debut.

Needless to say that Woolf + Lapin is quite excited to be working with the young directing duo, who dropped out of film school just a couple of years ago to make videos such as this.

We love their style which, along with the eclectic editing, is always a good mix of honest grit and rich texture.

Martin Girard & Bruce La Bruce To Co-Write New Film: Twincest

bruce-labruce-2

Woolf + Lapin’s Martin Girard and Bruce La Bruce received SODEC funding to write Twincest.

The new project comes right after La Bruce’s Gerontophilia, which is inspired by the coming-of-age Harold and Maud love story. And much like Gerontophilia, Twincest is quite a departure from the director’s usual stylized exploitation outings, such as LA Zombie.

“Twincest tells the story of identical twins Dominic and Daniel who are separated from their adulterous, lesbian mother shortly after their birth in 1950.”

La Bruce reunites with Gerontophilia producer Nicolas Comeau of 1976 Productions.

The production is slated for a 2015 summer start.

Michael Lawrence’s Brand Film: Getting the Band Back Together

This is the work of a new addition to Woolf + Lapin, emerging director Michael Lawrence, whose subtle direction adeptly humanizes the Google brand.

It’s about a group of old-time rockers getting back together after a decades-long hiatus. But there’s a catch. The members of the band in question, Patriarch, live whole states apart.

Enter Google Fiber, where technology is limitless and makes it possible to jam together, wherever you are. The film is touching not only because of its real, authentic characters, but how it bears down on the “what-ifs” that we’ve all had to live down at some point in our lives. Plus, the association to Google is absolutely seamless and frictionless. Michael did this under the Paradoxal banner.

Rock on Patriarch!

Félix & Paul At Tribeca to Present Their Virtual Experience “Strangers, A Moment With Patrick Watson”

Screen shot 2014-04-23 at 3.32.30 PM

Woolf+ Lapin’s Félix & Paul (from the emerging virtual reality company Once) are at Tribeca’s Bombay Sapphire House of Imagination from April 23rd to the 26th to show their cinematic vr experience “Strangers: A Moment With Patrick Watson.”

“Before I was really conscious of what my mind was telling me, I figured this guy was just sitting in front of me in the room… It was unbelievably cool.”

– Meghan Veal, Vice Motherboard

“It seemed so real that at one point I actually reached for my smartphone to take a picture.”

– Laura Hudson, Wired

“The most impressive Oculus Rift demo I have personally tried.”

– Jonathan Tustain, roadtovr.com

Unfortunately we can’t show any of this stuff here because it just wouldn’t do it justice. But the proprietary 3D 360º live-action recording technology they have developed is a sight to behold. After having sampled the experience for themselves, many industry insiders agreed that it’s the future. And it’s going on right now at Tribeca’s Bombay Sapphire House.

Tilda Swinton and The Eternity Dress

Our friends over at Same Art did this. It’s pretty cool.

“The Eternity Dress is a performance by Olivier Saillard and Tilda Swinton
which premiered on Novembre 20th, 2013, in the amphitheater of L’École nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris
in the framework of the Festival d’Automne à Paris

Prospect: A Great Sci-Fi Short From Shep Films

“Prospect is the coming-of-age story of a teenage girl on a toxic alien planet. She and her father hunt for precious materials, aiming to strike it rich. When the father is attacked by a roving bandit, the daughter must take control.”

Above the wonderful father/daughter relationship and the great angle on the coming-of-age tale, the rich sound scape of alien animals shrieking in the forest is what lends this short all its credibility.

Prospect, by Seattle-based Shep Films, premiered at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival.
